Missou Combines Vintage Inspiration with Modern Australian Womenswear

The Melbourne-based designer Rafaela who launched her brand Missou in 2025, describes herself as having an “absolute passion” for fashion design.

A Lifelong Love of Fashion, Design and Craftsmanship

Like many designers, Rafaela has a long family history of working with fabric and creating clothing. “My grandfather was a tailor and my mum was both a textile and handbag designer so I have always been surrounded by a love of fashion, design and art,” she explains.

“Leaning into more of the business side of the fashion industry, I studied merchandise management at university but always dreamt of starting my own label. After graduation, I got a job at an industry-leading brand as a buyer’s assistant where I was able to really learn the merchandising side.

“Then transferred into the design side, which allowed me to refine my skills with industry leading mentors. After climbing up the corporate fashion ladder for a bit, I decided that it was time to take the plunge and go out on my own, and that’s how Missou was born.”

Rafaela explains that “beautiful things” have always been her passion, and that she has been “creating and designing for as long as I can remember”.

Designing Timeless Pieces with Vintage Inspiration

Missou designs are created via wide-ranging research, repeatedly testing designs and then working with local industry professionals.

“Everything inspires me. I mostly draw inspiration from past eras, from the 60s to the 90s. I love pulling timeless inspiration from vintage silhouettes, styles and fabrics while giving it a modern twist. I am also incredibly inspired by my Mediterranean culture, unique fabrics and trims, and beautiful art and architecture. My inspirations are endless.

“I really want to create clothes that you can live in. Clothes that withstand trends and are versatile enough to be worn in a multitude of situations. I want these clothes to be high quality, intentional and curated but also fun.

“I want my clothes to be timeless and effortless with a bit of vintage flair and a little extra special detail to elevate,” Rafaela says.

Thoughtful Australian Production Beyond Fast Fashion

“Missou is ethically crafted in Australia with limited, exclusive collections to ensure there is no waste or excess product. I want to be the antithesis of fast fashion. I also use a lot of deadstock fabric.

“I want people to feel confident and the best version of themselves, no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

Rafeala’s plans for the brand focus on responsible growth and discovering more about her core customers: “I would love to keep growing and developing who the Missou girl is and what we sell to them.

“I have so many ideas that I cannot wait to execute, and would love to branch out to different categories. I would also love to do some pop up stores around the world.”
